Entreated to teach\, the prince who would eventually come to be known as the Buddha or awakened one\, eventually turned the wheel of the teachings on this profound truth\, ushering an abundance of spiritual wealth and goodness into our world. All of this benefit and goodness was not the result of material progress or social upheaval\, but instead was the fruit born of one persons inner transformation. \nIn this daylong workshop we will dive deep into the heart of the Buddha’s inner transformation and the spiritual tradition that arose from it. Through a combination of experiential learning\, guided/silent meditation\, and discussion we will explore how to access and develop a grounded open heart\, a more available and open space of mindful awareness\, and deeper insight into how to better overcome mental and emotional habits that cause us unnecessary suffering. This event is open to all. \nJoin the authors of Transcending: Trans Buddhist Voices for a book launch and discussion of this groundbreaking collection—sharing the many voices and experiences of trans\, genderqueer\, and nonbinary Buddhists. Author/presenters include zavé martohardjono\, Finn Schubert\, and Chance Krempasky. \nThe event will consist of a meditation and discussion\, followed by a book signing. Copies of Transcending as well as “Developing Trans*Competence: A Guide for Meditation and Retreat Centers” will be available for sale. \nFee by donation: Suggested starting donation is $15 but whatever you offer is greatly appreciated and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. Proceeds will be shared with NYI and Trans Lifeline\, an organization that provides peer support and hotline services to trans people. \nAbout Insight OUT Refuge: LGBTQI Sangha: \nInsight OUT meets on the 4th Monday of each month from 6:30-8:30pm. Our community is open to students of all Buddhist traditions\, as well as those who are in the beginning stages of exploring their meditation practice and have an interest in the Dharma. All those who identify as LGBTQI are welcome. \nWe gather to form a multicultural community in which we can support each other in our practice with a commitment toward social change. \nAbout the book:\nTranscending brings together more than thirty contributors from both the Mahayana and Theravada traditions to present a vision for a truly inclusive trans Buddhist sangha in the twenty-first century. Shining a light on a new generation of Buddhist role models\, this book gives voice to those who have long been marginalized within the Buddhist world and society at large. While trans\, genderqueer\, and nonbinary practitioners have experienced empowerment and healing through their commitment to the Buddha\, dharma\, and sangha\, they also share their experiences of isolation\, transphobia\, and aggression. In this diverse collection we hear the firsthand accounts\, thoughts\, and reflections of trans Buddhists from a variety of different lineages in an open invitation for all Buddhists to bring the issue of gender identity into the sangha\, into the discourse\, and onto the cushion. Only by doing so can we develop insight into our circumstances and grasp our true\, essential nature. \n“Contributors to this book bring a Buddhist lens to the spectrum of sexual and gender orientations with brilliance\, creativity\, and great personal courage. Their collective wisdom expands the relevance of dharma in contemporary culture by calling forth the intrinsic openness of our awakening hearts.” \n-Tara Brach\, author of Radical Acceptance\, True Refuge\, and The RAIN of Compassion \n“I believe that we will never see a true inclusive Buddhadharma until all voices of our diverse and beautiful community are expressed…The voices of Transcending embrace the beauty of the relative self and identity as a ground from which we begin our work of liberation. This anthology is more than a book about transgender Buddhist practitioners sharing their lives; it is a text that will save the lives of counteless transgender and queer preactitioners who need to know that there is a place for them in this rich tradition.” \n-Lama Rod Owens\, coauthor of Radical Dharma \n  \n  \n  \nAbout Amit Primor View all posts by Amit Primor URL:https://dev.nyimc.org/event/insight-out-refuge-lgbtqi-sangha-2-2019-08-26-2020-02-24/ LOCATION:New York Insight Meditation Center\, 28 West 27th Street\, 10th Floor\, New York\, NY\, 10001\, United States CATEGORIES:Meditation Groups - Affinity Sanghas ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://dev.nyimc.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jon-tyson-518811-unsplash.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20200225T190000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20200225T210000 DTSTAMP:20240328T181902 CREATED:20200126T060002Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200126T060704Z UID:43115-1582657200-1582664400@dev.nyimc.org SUMMARY:Tuesday Dharma Gathering DESCRIPTION:Tuesday Dharma Gathering\n \nwith Amy Selzer and Brian Simmons\n \nTuesday\, February 25th\, 2020 | 7:00pm-9:00pm\n \n\n \nThe Tuesday Dharma Gathering provides an introduction to Insight Meditation\, as well as an opportunity to meditate in a supportive environment. Sometimes it’s not just recognizing them mentally but exploring them somatically and imagistically as well. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, yoga\, and inquiry as a way of training people to relate differently to stresses in their lives and in fact\, relate differently to each moment of their lives. Each class includes various “formal” meditation practices\, mindful movement and discussion/inquiry exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress. Class size ranges from 15 – 30 participants. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of formal meditation daily as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nMethods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450\nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need for other NYI offerings. We’ll bring a practical and contemplative approach exploring meaning and message through reflection and relationship. How we view and how we choose to relate to our pain\, trauma\, challenging life issues and symptoms is as important as what we do about them and what we do to treat them. \nWe will sit with and live the questions: What is healing and how does it happen? What is the difference between pain and suffering? How can we welcome and open to our pain and illness as an opportunity and vehicle for awakening and freedom from suffering? \nWe’ll practice skillful means and cultivating healing qualities of being\, unconditional presence and self compassion? We will explore transformation and awakening through suffering. How can we be with our health challenges and painful truth in a way that is wise\, compassionate and healing leading to liberation? \nFrom a Buddhist perspective and the 4 Noble truths\, in the suffering is the end of suffering. From a healing perspective\, in the heart of the pain is the healing. How and where do the healing journey and spiritual path begin and where do they meet and how can they enhance and support one another along the way? You need not have an illness or be in pain to benefit from this day long…just be human! \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile devices such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the form if it is partially obscured or cut off. Those who already registered for the in-person program will automatically be transferred to this online program. All registrants will be emailed the link to the online program a few days prior to the program. \nJhāna\, or meditative absorption\, is an example of what modern psychology calls “a flow state.” In jhāna we’re effortlessly present with our experience: undistracted\, calm\, embodied\, and joyful. This kind of meditative experience can seem unattainable to any but an elite of “expert” meditators. But is that the case? \nYou’ve probably been given very specific instructions on how to develop mindfulness. You’ve probably received very clear direction in how to cultivate lovingkindness. But jhāna — eventhough it’s traditionally considered to be the basis of Awakening itself—is usually left to chance. It’s no wonder that jhāna remains annoyingly elusive\, or only happens out of the blue\, often with us not being entirely clear how or why. \nBut\, what if there was a simple\, step-by-step way to let jhāna arise? During this online daylong retreat Bodhipaksa will break down the components of the jhāna experience and introduce a step-by-step approach to cultivating it. \nAt the end of this program\, retreatants will have access to a video recording of the day. \nRegistration:\nRegistration for this online retreat will close on Saturday\, March 21st at 7am ET\nThis program was formerly a 2-day weekend retreat at NYI and is now a one-day program online. In what ways is practice entirely unlike psychotherapy? \nDuring this evening together\, we will explore how mindfulness overlaps with the healing we find in psychotherapy: it supports self-understanding\, uncovers behavioral patterns and transforms how we relate to our past. Unlike traditional psychotherapy\, however\, the mindfulness path relies on states of concentration\, letting go and surrender that point to cultivations beyond typical psychotherapeutic aims. \nAll are welcome. \nRegistration:\nRegistration will close 6 pm ET\, Friday\, March 27th. \nWe are transferring all who registered for the in-person program to the online program. If it is affordable for you to have a generous heart\, please pause and consider accepting credit towards a future program\, or turning your registration into a donation. Thank you!.\n \nWhat is feminine power? Is it something to be acquired? Or uncovered and reclaimed? Join us for a day of meditation\, writing exercises\, and group sharing aimed at exploring these rich questions. What are true feminine values? And how can we have true impact and affect change in the world guided by these values? \nWe will explore in practice: making space for the unknown\, for darkness\, for receptivity and generosity. And we will explore off the cushion\, remembering memories or connection to the feminine–in nature\, in relationships\, and within ourselves. Together we will open to a presence\, a capacity for connection and the sacred that cannot be the property of any one tradition. \nWe will also touch our separation\, making space for our cultural and social differences. Together we will explore the work we might undertake to better support and befriend one another as women. There will be time for affinity groups where people of color and white people can explore and investigate their particular experiences. \nThe workshop is open to all who identify as women. \nAbout Amit Primor View all posts by Amit Primor URL:https://dev.nyimc.org/event/exploring-the-power-of-the-feminine-a-daylong-workshop-for-women/ LOCATION:New York Insight Meditation Center\, 28 West 27th Street\, 10th Floor\, New York\, NY\, 10001\, United States CATEGORIES:Daylong Programs ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://dev.nyimc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/anjali.jpg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20200329T100000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20200329T130000 DTSTAMP:20240328T181902 CREATED:20191227T162743Z LAST-MODIFIED:20200321T195624Z UID:42717-1585476000-1585486800@dev.nyimc.org SUMMARY:Now Online: Finding a Refuge in the Body DESCRIPTION:Now Online Only: Finding a Refuge in the Body\n \nwith Peter Doobinin\n \nSunday\, March 29th\, 2020 | 10:00am – 1:00pm EST\n \nDue to COVID-19\, this program will now be offered online only. For the foreseeable future\, NYI will no longer hold in-person public programs\, sanghas and community meetings. The major reason for our closing is of course the health and safety of our teachers and community of yogis\, as well as to support the larger efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. We hold our mission to provide refuge for our sangha dearly\, especially during these challenging times when connection to one another is all the more important. \nPlease check our website calendar for further updates regarding this sangha and other programs. Info about online access will be listed under the description below. \nThe Tuesday Dharma Gathering provides an introduction to Insight Meditation\, as well as an opportunity to meditate in a supportive environment. These teacher-led gatherings offer the opportunity to meet teachers\, hear a dharma talk\, and participate in a dialogue about how to apply the principles of Buddhist meditation to our daily lives. \nIf you are new to New York Insight or an experienced meditator\, we encourage you to attend this online community gathering. (While we work through the kinks while we transition this program online\, temporarily we will not be holding the usual beginner’s orientation.) Invite your friends\, all are welcome! \nHow to Join Us Online: Click HERE to register to join the online sangha meeting and receive the online access information. \nTo give dana to support this sangha\, please fill out the dana form below. \nIf you are using a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the form if it is partially obscured or cut off. Please contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nFee by donation: You can now pre-register by paying the suggested donation online for our Tuesday Dharma Gathering; as always you can just drop in and “pay what you can.” Whatever you offer is greatly appreciated and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. For this event\, all donations are shared between the teacher(s) and NYI. \nIf you have questions about your registration (cancellation policy\, membership discount\, email confirmation\, etc.)\, please read our FAQs. If your question is not addressed in the FAQs\, please email registration@nyimc.org. \nFor more information about our generosity policy and the sliding scale fee structure\, please click here. \nAbout Amit Primor View all posts by Amit Primor URL:https://dev.nyimc.org/event/online-tuesday-dharma-gathering-4-14-20/ LOCATION:Online through Zoom\, NY CATEGORIES:Evening Events,For Beginners,Open to All ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://dev.nyimc.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/meditation7.jpg END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
