SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness and the Meaning Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness and the Meaning Crisis \nwith Dave Smith \nSaturday\, April 18th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nModern society is marked by a deep sense of unease\, lack of purpose\, and profound disconnection. This fundamental spiritual crisis fuels our struggles with mental health\, addiction\, suicide\, and widespread cynicism toward institutions. \nOur culture glorifies busyness as a measure of success\, leading to inevitable burnout. To cope with feeling uneasy and unfulfilled\, we turn to constant distraction and destructive consumption. We are incessantly bombarded with artificial digital content fueled by get rich schemes to wellness gurus that are carefully tracked and amplified by addictive algorithms designed for profit. This system provides a deeply dishonest sense of happiness that we all are waking up to. \nThe resulting guilt\, shame\, and despair leave us feeling powerless and betrayed. This yearning for deeper meaning explains the resurgence of interest in ancient wisdom\, such as the Buddhist concept of the middle way\, which offers a path toward contentment and transformation in our complex world. \nDuring this event\, Dave will offer teachings and practices that may help us to untangle from the mess. There will be guided practices\, dharma talks\, and time for us to engage in constructive dialog. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: Letting Go in Four Stages
DESCRIPTION:Online: Letting Go in Four Stages \nwith Martine Batchelor \nSaturday\, March 21st\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nMost of us try to be wise and compassionate in our actions and relationships. However\, we often repeat patterns which cause hurt to ourselves and others. The meditative path encourages us to let go of these patterns. But what does letting go really look like? How can we truly “let go” and re-engage with the world? \nDuring this 3-hour program\, we will look at the four stages of letting go\, and learn about and practice mindfulness. We will learn about meditation’s capacity to open our potential for letting go and creatively engage with the world. We will develop stability and calmness\, and cultivate clarity by exploring our triggers\, habits\, and conditions and by being mindful of our felt experience. \nWith the help of Buddhist teacher and author Martine Batchelor\, you’ll find that you are not as stuck as you think you might be. You have already experienced moments of letting go. You have the capacity to recognize and further develop these moments\, as well as your creative potential for change. \nThere is not just one way of letting go but many. Join us to explore each moment of letting go and learn how to creatively engage with wisdom and compassion in all aspects of your life. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Buddhist Psychology - Understanding Your Mind and The Abhidharma Teachings
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Buddhist Psychology – Understanding Your Mind and The Abhidharma Teachings \nwith David Nichtern \nSaturday\, January 31st\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn order to free ourselves from deeply ingrained patterns of confusion that lead to unnecessary pain and suffering\, the Buddhist tradition offers a comprehensive philosophical system that examines in great detail how our mind works—including our psychological habits\, mental fixations\, and emotional tendencies. This in-depth study of the architecture of the mind is called Abhidharma. \nThese teachings provide a systematic and nuanced map of how our consciousness operates—including how thoughts\, emotions\, feelings\, sensations\, and sense perceptions all come to arise and manifest in our moment-by-moment experience\, shaping how we understand and perceive our world. \nDeveloping our understanding of Abhidharma increases awareness of our habitual and counterproductive patterns of thought\, emotions\, and behavior and to modulate and release them. During this program we will be emphasizing the experiential aspect of these teachings: personal and transformational\, powerful and immediate. \nThis daylong workshop will include meditation practice and instruction\, talks and discussion. \nNote: This program will be recorded. SUMMARY:Online: Getting Unstuck - How Meditation Changes Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Online: Getting Unstuck – How Meditation Changes Your Life \nwith nico hase \nSunday\, January 18th\, 2026 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \n \nFeeling stuck in old patterns? Wondering whether meditation actually changes anything about how you move through the world? \nJoin dharma teacher and psychologist nico hase for a clear\, honest exploration of how meditation helps us shift deeply ingrained habits—not as a quick fix\, but as a steady practice that changes how we meet difficulty\, relate to others\, and show up for our lives. \nDrawing from thirty years of practice—including six years as a Zen monk and intensive Vipassana training with Joseph Goldstein—nico will explore what actually transforms as you practice. How the mind begins to catch reactivity before it explodes. How emotions become workable rather than overwhelming. How a little more space\, presence\, and kindness can reshape even the patterns that feel most entrenched. \nThis isn’t a talk about techniques or Buddhist philosophy. It’s about the real\, lived changes that emerge from consistent meditation—the quiet shifts in perspective that gradually alter everything from conflict to career uncertainty to the small frustrations that trip us up each day. \nFormat: The afternoon includes guided meditation\, nico’s reflections on how meditation creates meaningful life change\, and generous time for questions and community dialogue. \nWhat People Are Saying\n“With his PhD in counseling psychology and his decades-long commitment to meditation and dharma practice\, nico brings a unique depth and perspective to his mentoring and teaching. SUMMARY:Online: Building a Relevant and Transformative Meditation Practice
DESCRIPTION:Online: Building a Relevant and Transformative Meditation Practice \nwith Dave Smith \nSunday\, April 6th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00 pm ET \n \nMany of us turn to mindfulness looking for more clarity\, ease\, or steadiness in our daily lives—but it’s not always obvious how to get there. \nThe Buddhist path offers practical\, time-tested guidance: cultivate what’s helpful and let go of what isn’t. This simple but powerful principle can bring a sense of direction to our practice and help us make real progress\, both on and off the cushion. \nThis core idea is at the heart of the teachings on Right Effort\, and is further clarified in the Fourth Foundation of Mindfulness\, where the practice becomes about observing and transforming the state of the mind itself. \nIn this half-day workshop\, meditation teacher Dave Smith will guide us through these essential teachings\, offering practical tools and frameworks for how to work skillfully with our own minds. \nThrough guided meditation\, discussion\, and Q&A\, we’ll explore how to move past confusion or stagnation and develop a practice that’s genuinely transformative—something that helps us meet our everyday lives with more confidence\, steadiness\, and insight. \nThis event is open to all. No prior experience is needed. \nYou may also be interested in Dave Smith’s upcoming online course at NYInsight\, Mindfulness and the Middle Way – Cultivating an Authentic Dharma\, starting May 20. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. But this disconnection can leave us feeling overwhelmed\, anxious\, or stuck in stress patterns. \nWithout tools to ground ourselves\, we often miss the inner guidance that fosters resilience\, clarity\, and peace. \nOver the course of this evening\, you’ll learn somatic meditation\, Buddhist mindfulness\, and Somatic Experiencing® (SE) techniques to help you reconnect deeply with yourself. Drawing on the combined wisdom of mindfulness and SE\, this class offers powerful practices to regulate the nervous system\, access embodied awareness\, and develop a compassionate relationship with your inner experience. \nGuided by principles of mindful awareness and SE’s focus on nervous system resilience\, you’ll learn to cultivate your “felt sense”—an intuitive way of tuning into body sensations and emotions as guides to your inner state. \nThrough gentle somatic exercises\, mindful movement\, and meditation\, you’ll release tension\, calm the nervous system\, and foster a grounded presence. \nEveryone is welcome to participate\, regardless of experience with meditation or body-based practices. Please bring a journal for taking notes. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. SUMMARY:In Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Jon Aaron \n\nIn-Person Course: Tuesdays\, January 23rd – March 12th\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm ET\nIn-Person Daylong: Sunday\, February 25th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \nCourse Location: Balance Arts Center at 151 W 30th St 3rd floor\, New York\, NY \nCourse Description: \nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect: \nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25 – 30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR: \nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings.
